The Ghana National
Union of Polytechnics (GNUPS) red carpet the conversion of Polytechnics in the
nation to Technical Universities as proposed by government.
The Coordinating
Secretary of the Union, Kwame Amponsah Manu in an interview with the media
disclosed that although they hailed the conversion, they do not subscribe to
the complete erasure of the name polytechnic as proposed by the Dr. Afeti’s
technical committee.
‘For us, if the
conversion is not rushed, and it is properly rolled out, then we are sure it
could help upgrade the institutions, faculties, refurbish laboratories and
eliminate policy restrictions that has hindered the polytechnics amidst
societal stigmatization’.
He said for them as a
Union, they understood the conversion as 2012 when the announcement was made to
be equipping the institutions to grasped and accomplish their current mandate
as contained in act 745, because they were not releasing that to the fullest,
and so they never envisage a name change. ‘We do not support the name technical
universities as the committee seeks to suggest.
Amponsah argued that he
does not know why the committee choose to focused most of their work on Europe
came back to report that in Europe institutions analogous to the ones they are
proposing in our case as a nation are either institute of technologies, university
of applied sciences or technical universities. He accused the committee for
comfortably selecting technical university because to them they do not want
identity clashes with university of allied science and science of technology.
Frustrated Amponsah
could not hide his shock about the work of the committee to overlook at the
institutions that also benefited from conversion from polytechnics and still
using polytechnics. He named Italy, Spain, Asia and United Kingdom as operating
same institutions with the names Polytechnic University to buttress his doubt
of the committees study.
He alleged, if the
change of name is not politically intended, then at a compromise government
should consider settling on Polytechnic Universities to avert the troubles of
one struggling to tell his/her story of one’s certificate. He whispered they
also want identity memory because Ghanaians have the tendency of tagging things
base on their names. ‘Everybody knows that Hong Kong Polytechnic University was
once a Polytechnic’
